Entry runs by timed slot rather than a walk-up queue: you choose a date and a time when you book and arrive close to it. Inside there's no clock running, and most visitors spend an hour to two hours moving through the apartments, the salons and the loggia at their own pace.
Quieter times
Weekends and school holidays bring the most visitors, as at most Paris monuments. A weekday slot, early or late in the day, generally means fewer people in the rooms with you.
The Friday late opening
On Fridays the palace stays open into the evening instead of closing at the usual hour. The gilded rooms under lamp light, and the Place de la Concorde lit up below the loggia at dusk, make a Friday evening slot worth planning around if your dates allow it.
A good wet-day plan
Because almost the whole visit happens indoors, the palace is one of the more useful stops in Paris on a grey or rainy day, when the city's outdoor views are at their worst. Spring and autumn bring the easiest weather for pairing it with a walk through the neighbouring Tuileries Garden; summer brings the heaviest demand for slots.
Best light for the loggia
The loggia looks straight across the Place de la Concorde to the obelisk, and the view reads best in the low, warm light of late afternoon, when the stone of the square takes on colour. Midday sun flattens it, so a later slot is the more rewarding time to be up there with a camera.
